Descripción del trabajo

At First Quantum, we free the talent of our people by taking a very different approach which is underpinned by a very different, very definite culture – the “First Quantum Way”.

Working with us is not like working anywhere else, which is why we recruit people who will take a bolder, smarter approach to spot opportunities, solve problems and deliver results.

Our culture is all about encouraging you to think independently and to challenge convention to deliver the best result. That’s how we continue to achieve extraordinary things in extraordinary locations.

Job description:

First Quantum Minerals is a rapidly growing global mining group with a strong production base in Africa, Australia and Europe as well as series of substantial new development projects in Latin America.

The company maintains an extensive exploration strategy consistent with its ambitious project development pipeline and needs motivated and resilient geoscientists to realise its goals

First Quantum Minerals is seeking top geoscience candidates to apply for our Graduate Programme. The Graduate Program seeks to select and train highly capable geoscientists in a two year accelerated development programme which will take you through a series of placements into exploration and production situations around the world. Successful candidates will work on a variety of deposit types and environments, receiving the necessary training and mentoring to take on early responsibility in their career.

Successful candidates will have:

  • Minimum BSc degree in Geoscience, preferably including post graduate studies in mineral deposit formation, magmatic geochemistry, sedimentology or volcanology, demonstrating a high level of scientific and analytical ability.
  • Practical exploration or mining experience in porphyry and/or sediment hosted mineral systems would be well regarded, although graduates with relevant research background and strong field skills will also be considered.
  • Proven technical abilities relevant to exploration will be highly regarded e.g.:
    • Integration and interpretation of geological, geophysical, spectral and/or geochemical datasets
    • Planning and interpretation of regional and deposit scale geochemical exploration programmes
    • Familiarity with exploration software (GIS, IoGAS, Leapfrog) and database management
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with multilingual ability preferred.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Collection of regional and prospect scale datasets:  geological mapping, geochemical and spectral mineral mapping.
  • Integration, modeling and interpretation of geochemical data together with multidisciplinary datasets;
  • Development of robust exploration targets in collaboration with Project Geoscientists
  • Supervision of exploration drilling programmes, including modeling and interpretation of results
  • Pursue and maintain professional relationships with a range of relevant external consultants and institutions.
  • Secondments into active mining operations will be encouraged where you would be involved in open pit or underground mapping and ore-control programmes.

Employment basis

Discovery of critical mineral resources is getting harder, we need the best and brightest to push the boundaries of science and teamwork in the remotest places on Earth. Whilst we operate several small exploration offices in Latin America, Australia and Africa many of our global geoscientists work remotely for 4 to 8 weeks at a time in isolated locations. We expect and give flexibility around a nominal 6-on, 2-off ratio, from your nominated base. To cope with this career, you need to love travel, working with different cultures and be capable of operating at times as part of a ‘virtual team’ communicating, learning and sharing by whatever communication means are available. We give back by helping you to build your career experience through mentoring, mine visits, technical workshops and conferences, as well as a competitive remuneration package.

The FQM Way:

  • A make-it-happen culture: Ours is a culture that prioritizes the quality of thinking over job titles and rank. It’s a culture that prizes self-reliance, hard work and promotes the simple principle that ‘good enough’, isn’t. So if you know what you’re made of, or want to find out, FQM is for you.
  • A place to grow, faster: We love to see people grow. Whether this is through formal learning or, more often, by presenting them with greater opportunities than their title might suggest. The result is that the smart, the bold and the driven typically do more and go further at FQM.
